Ten
rules for younger looking skin
10)
Use sun savvy.
Get your daily dose of sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon
when the rays aren’t as intense. At all other times, stay in the
shade, under a hat, dressed in light clothes that cover the skin. Invest
in a natural sunscreen, especially for your face and hands.
9) Butt out.
Cigarettes rob your skin of oxygen, and cells suffocate. The constant
squint and pucker also leads to deep wrinkles.
8) Bye-bye
booze.
Use of alcohol leads to free radical formation, which promote aging. Alcohol
also dehydrates the skin leading to tiny lines and wrinkles, as well as
broken capillaries.
7) Sleep,
glorious sleep.
Adequate shut-eye allows the body to repair daily damage. Most adults
require at least seven hours of quality sleep.
6) Relax.
Stress contributes to cardiovascular disease, obesity and a scowl that
carves itself into your face until it is a permanent fixture that scares
little children. Try yoga, meditation or even kick-boxing to deal with
your pent-up stresses. You will eventually get wrinkles, so opt for laugh
lines instead.
5) Eat right.
Our bodies were not designed to fuel themselves on French fries and chocolate
bars. Antioxidants found in fresh fruits and vegetables quench the free
radicals that do so much cellular damage. EFAs found in flax and fish
oil surround cells and help to retain moisture. Eat fresh, raw, organic
produce and whole grains whenever possible.
4) Keep it
clean.
Remove dirt and make-up nightly with a gentle product that contains no
harmful alcohols, preservatives or cleansing agents. Adding vitamins and
herbs to a bad formulation doesn’t change the fact that it’s
a bad formulation. Learn how to read labels. In the morning, be sure to
rinse off toxins released from your skin during the night.
3) Get a Lube
job.
Always follow your cleansing with a moisturizer designed for your skin
type. Again, read the label, and look for ingredients that attract and
keep water in your skin.
2) Give nature
a hand.
As we age, our natural ability to shed dead skin cells grinds to a halt.
Exfoliation involves using either natural acids to unglue dead cells from
the skin surface, or using a wash cloth or gentle scrub to manually remove
cells. The result is a fresher, younger-looking appearance. Dry-brushing
your body skin before your shower helps to loosen dead skin, improve circulation,
and encourage the release of toxins that contribute to aging.
1) H20
Most of us walk through life in a perpetual state of dehydration. Not
only does this affect brain function, metabolism and energy levels, but
it also plays havoc on the appearance of our skin. You’ve heard
it before, but it bears repeating: drink at least 8 eight-ounces glasses
of pure water every day—and more if you enjoy a cup of coffee or
two. Caffeine works to eliminate water from your body. Avoid hot baths
and showers that damage skin, and invest in a filter for your showerhead
to remove age-promoting chlorine.
